State Representative Bradford R. Hill is serving his 10th term in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, to which he was first elected in November 1998. Proudly serving the 4th Essex District, he represents the towns of Ipswich, Hamilton, Wenham, Manchester-by-the-Sea, Topsfield and Rowley. Prior to his election, Brad was a member of the Hamilton Zoning Board of Appeals, a member of the Ipswich Board of Selectmen, as well as a staffer in Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr’s office.
In 2009, Brad was appointed to the rank of Minority Whip in the House of Representatives, and in 2015 was appointed Assistant Minority Leader. During his time in office, Brad has worked hard to deliver proven, effective results for his constituents and town officials. He has been a pioneer in Massachusetts criminal justice reform, authoring “raise the age” legislation that raised the age of juvenile offenders to include 17-year-olds, as well as “Melissa’s Law,” which mandated habitual violent offender sentencing reform.
Working cooperatively with his colleagues across the aisle to deliver commonsense legislating for the communities he represents, as well as across the Commonwealth, Brad takes pride in his nonpartisan legislative priorities. During his time on Beacon Hill, Brad fights to ensure quality care for developmental disabilities and mental health care, to change the local aid formula to bring more state money to suburban communities to fund education, to improve local infrastructure, to provide property tax relief and prescription drug relief for local seniors and veterans and to protect our vast environmental resources on the North Shore and beyond – among so much more.
In 2013, Brad was diagnosed with a rare blood cancer, completing chemotherapy and undergoing a bone marrow transplant during his treatment – all while remaining committed to his responsibilities on Beacon Hill and throughout the 4th Essex District. Despite personal struggle, Brad continued meeting with our Boards of Selectmen and town officials, police and fire chiefs and councils on aging.
Brad Hill is a Hamilton, MA native and a graduate of Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School. His parents, Virginia and Howard “Taffy” Hill were pillars of the community, owning and operating the landmark Hill’s Department Store in Ipswich for over 50 years, where Brad worked as a manager for many years before its closing.
In 1991, Brad married Aimee Lee, and they continue to reside in Ipswich with their two children, Zachary and Courtney, graduates of Ipswich High School and Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School, respectively. Zachary graduated from Salem State University last spring, and Courtney will be graduating early this year from Merrimack College with a degree in sports medicine.
